Unasaka The rise of rapid tides, collisions of currents flowing in opposite directions – swirling as if a dragon was swimming underneath the surface, springing from the bottom of the sea… The low tide was there moments ago – but when I look again I notice it has moved. The edge of the sea approaches without any sounds, easily rising above my height, as if it were trying to swallow me. I feel that the Shiwaku Sea is subtle, yet it has a harshness reminiscent of death. “People cannot live under the sea” “A lot of times I thought I would die” “It is a terrible moment to lose the sense of direction” “During four months of diving and fishing, my family and I have been tense and everyone is prepared for the worst” “When the tube clogged and no longer supplied oxygen, I questioned myself; will I be able to hold my breath another 20 seconds before reaching the surface” “When I saw the ladder from under the surface, I felt I had finally been saved” The water surface is a border between life and death, world and afterworld, reality and fiction. There’s an intermediate realm between the two. Like a beach where circumstances alternate every 6 hours, the borderline appearing and disappearing: land (where people can live) and under water (where people cannot live). From the words of the fishermen on Honjima, who are directly related to the Shiwaku Sea, it seems that they know this is the only way of life and they are prepared to live after the rules that come with it.
